What does a Lactation Consultant do?

A Lactation Consult combines a clinical evaluation of  breastfeeding, the mother/newborn dyad and is educational appointment. 
 
Appointments can be either in your home or my office in Princeton. These usually last about 1-2 hours and I make sure that you have a care plan to follow on your own. I like to make sure that all of your questions are answered and that you are comfortable with the information you recieved.
 
As follow up to your in-home consult, I am available by email and phone. I like mothers to report progress and/or frustrations to me as they work through any breastfeeding issues.
  

Private Lactation Visits are helpful for the following:

·         Nipple or breast pain

·         Latch-on difficulties

·         Flat or inverted nipples

·         Low milk supply

·         Slow weight gain

·         Crying or colicky baby

·         Breastfeeding a premature baby

·         Breastfeeding twins or triplets

·         Relactation for an adoptive breastfeeding

·         Breastfeeding and returning to employment outside the home

·         Pumping and storing breastmilk

·         Breastfeeding special needs babies

  • Reassurance that breastfeeding is going well

 

Not sure? Try this check list:   

  • If you are experiencing pain while breastfeeding
  •  If your newborn nurses less than eight times in 24 hours
  • If your baby under five weeks of age is not wetting at least six to eight diapers and/or has less than two bowel movements daily
  • If you do not hear or see your baby swallowing once your milk has ejected
  • If your baby has jaundice
  • If your baby is not gaining weight well without supplementation
  • If you feel your milk supply is low
  • If you think you have an overabundant milk supply
  • If you suspect that you have a plugged duct or a breast infection
  • If you or your baby show signs of thrush
  • If you are concerned about medications and breastfeeding
  • If your baby seems unhappy at your breast or refuses to nurse
  • If your baby is born prematurely
  • If you are weaning
